The International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation is dedicated to the mission of effectively communicating science-based information on health, nutrition and food safety for the public good.
Our vision is a global environment where credible science drives food policy and consumer choice.
We subscribe to Ten Guiding Principles as we work to help improve the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities.
Incorporated as a public education organization in 1991 and based in Washington, DC, the International Food Information Council Foundation is formally recognized as a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit under the U.S. Tax Code. We do not lobby or further any political, partisan, or corporate interest. We maintain certain standards to assure our commitment to science-based information. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions section for additional information.
We bring together, work with, and provide information to consumers, health and nutrition professionals, educators, government officials, and food, beverage, and agricultural industry professionals. We have established partnerships with a wide range of credible professional organizations, government agencies, and academic institutions to advance the public understanding of key issues. For example, we have a long-standing relationship with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion as part of the Dietary Guidelines Alliance, a public-private partnership focused on the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the MyPlate Food Guidance System.
Recognizing the global nature of food safety, nutrition, and health issues, the Foundation extends its mission internationally. We share education materials with an independent network of Food Information Organizations and partners from around the world.
We also serve as a news media resource. We provide science-based information to the media and refer journalists to our 350 independent, credentialed experts on a variety of nutrition and food safety topics.
Our Work and Impact
The following examples demonstrate the variety of valuable programs, initiatives, and products that we offer to deliver impact.
Our Web site, www.FoodInsight.org, serves as a nutrition and food safety resource for consumers, health professionals, journalists, educators, government officials, and students. We provide important and timely resources on a variety of topics such as weight management, diet (food) and health, food safety, food production, international food issues, and communications.
We use the latest technology, communication tools, and interactive format, including with our Blog; FoodInsightTV, which includes our “Ask an Expert,” “Person on the Street,” Web casts, and educational videos; Facebook; and Twitter to reach the broadest audience in this fast-paced world.
We also host or participate in national and international professional conferences and meetings that bring public and private stakeholders together for important discussions and to promote awareness. For a list of upcoming events, visit our Calendar of Events.
We help our stakeholders stay on top of the latest research and trends. Our popular monthly Food Insight newsletter (available on-line only) contains information-packed articles and news. Click here to subscribe to this timely and free publication.
We commission primary research on public opinion about food safety and nutrition and share the results with stakeholders and the public. Our International Food Informational Council Foundation Food & Health Survey provides information about how Americans connect the food they eat with their health. Recent surveys have explored topics such as food safety, overall diet, physical activity, weight management, dietary fats, functional foods, caffeine, and food allergies. The survey results also help shape public health communication and education initiatives and measure progress toward public health goals.
Our 2008 International Food Informational Council Foundation Food & Health Survey consumer research identified a significant gap between those consumers who say breakfast is extremely or somewhat important to achieving an overall healthful diet and those that actually consume breakfast on a regular basis. In response, we created a Breakfast and Health Program that targets the parents of children ages twelve and younger. Our Breakfast and Health Communicators Tool Kit includes resources that explore the science supporting the benefits of breakfast as well as tips on how to best communicate with consumers about these benefits.
Our childhood obesity prevention initiative, www.Kidnetic.com, is a healthful eating and active living web site for children and their families, as well as for health professionals and educators. The site is intended to encourage children (ages nine to twelve) and their parents to adopt active, healthful lifestyles. Kidnetic.com addresses food, fun, fitness, and feelings, and is unique in that it offers activities to get children up and moving while they are online. It also provides healthful recipe ideas, a Real-Life Guide for Parents, and a lesson-based curriculum Leader’s Guide for educators and health professionals.
As a public education foundation, we are committed to helping the next generation of nutrition and food safety communicators. The Sylvia Rowe Fellowship Award, named in honor of our former President and CEO, was established to give promising students and recent graduates a six to twelve week paid internship at our offices in Washington, DC, in order to enhance their capabilities and communication skills.
We also believe in the importance of educating health and nutrition professionals. We regularly host Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programs, which are offered in-person and via Web cast, and have developed a series of Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the American Dietetic Association, CPE-approved learning modules on a variety of subjects.
