As temperatures fall as quickly as the leaves from the trees, you might be wondering how you can heat things up in the morning. A hot breakfast does not always have to be bacon and eggs or pancakes. Breakfast can also be a good time to get a jump start on eating right by adding in to the mix some of the MyPyramid food groups to encourage, including whole grains, fruits and veggies and low-fat or fat-free dairy.
Whether creating a morning meal for one or for a family, here are some hot breakfast ideas:
- Warm milk – it’s not just for bedtime: heat a half a cup of warm milk in the microwave or on the stove top and pour it over your favorite whole-grain cereal.
- Heated granola: pop your favorite granola with milk in the microwave for a hot cereal with a bit of crunch. This also works for other “nugget” type cereals.
- Egg-stra special eggs: Get a serving of veggies in the morning and add a bit of a kick to this morning staple. Cut up peppers – red, green, yellow or orange – and onion and sauté them in a pan before adding your eggs to scramble. Hot, colorful and healthful all in one dish!
And for those of you who say you don’t have time for breakfast, here are a few simple ideas for breakfast on the go:
- Oats in a cup: Make your favorite oatmeal and put it in a travel coffee mug. The mug will keep the oatmeal warm and you can enjoy it on the road or at your desk.
- The classic egg sandwich: This is one of my mother’s favorite “to go” breakfasts. Toast two slices of whole grain, cook up an egg, add any favorite condiments – mine are a bit of low-fat mayo and a slice of tomato – and put them together for a quick on-the-go meal!
So what do you do to heat up the morning meal during the colder months? We'd love to hear your ideas!
