The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is just a little delayed from its November 2009 deadline in providing a ruling on the safety of bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is widely used as a compound in the epoxy resins for can coatings and in polycarbonate in plastic coatings. These coating add to the safety and integrity of food packaging. However, misinformation and controversy about the safety of BPA continues to resonate among consumers and in the media.
Carl Winter, PhD, Director of the Food Safety Program and Extension Toxicologist at the University of California at Davis provided a great perspective on BPA and perhaps why FDA delayed its November 2009 ruling on the Institute of Food Technologists E-Perspective blog. Carl is someone who we've worked with a lot and is well known as someone with a clear, science-based approach to BPA, acrylamide and other chemical compounds that might be found in our food supply.
Take a look and let us know what you think about BPA; FDA; food packaging technologies and even what you think about Carl.
