Tools for Effective Communication

Beginning a New Nutrition Conversation with Consumers

Consumers are exposed to a plethora of health and nutrition information from various sources—family, friends, professional colleagues, the media, and the Internet, among others. Although many of these sources offer well-meaning diet and health advice, conflicting recommendations and the absence of proper context may result in “consumer confusion.”

As health professionals, our role is to help clarify these mixed messages to consumers and to tailor health messages according to their specific needs and circumstances.  In other words, we are COMMUNICATORS who face the interesting challenge of “enlightening without overwhelming” our target audiences. It means saying what we want to say in ways consumers want to hear it.

This is where a New Nutrition Conversation with Consumers comes in. It’s a series of communication tools designed to equip us with the skills we need to understand our audience better and to promote healthful dietary practices using consumer-friendly language.
