Functional Foods: A Winning Plate

Interview with Ultramarathoner Michael Wardian

The Road to a Winning Plate with Functional Foods

With the 2012 Summer Olympics upon us, the IFIC Foundation has been working with athletes and world renowned dietitians to inspire Americans to think differently about food as fuel and to enhance performance.

Did you know that even elite athletes do not need a diet substantially different from what is recommended in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans? According to the International Olympic Committee Report on Nutrition, both elite and recreational athletes (the rest of us) should eat a diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals, does not drastically reduce carbohydrates, protein or fat, and is centered on fruits, vegetables, lean protein sources and healthful fats.

Detailed information on diet strategies incorporating foods that can also be included in the diet to improve overall health and performance, so-called functional foods, is only a click away.
