As a new school year approaches, health professionals must be equipped to provide practical guidance to help parents follow healthful diet and physical activity practices while managing the challenges of "back to school." Research from the Dietary Guidelines Alliance shows consumers are most receptive to clear, simple, upbeat messages that focus on specific actions to help consumers achieve guidance recommendations. Recognizing that parents value family involvement and individualized solutions, what messages can health professional convey to empower their parents toward healthful behaviors given the lifetsyle changes accompanying the new school year?

The Dietary Guidelines Alliance’s It’s All About You Communicators Tool Kit, is a free teaching tool to help nutrition communicators convey positive, simple and consistent nutrition and health messages for consumers. This session seeks to raise awareness of how to utilize the Tool Kit and to encourage parents to prioritize healthful eating and physical activity within their families while adjusting to the new school year . The messages in the toolkit were consumer tested and the booklet was pilot tested by the Cooperative Extension Service. The Tool Kit, consists of a booklet, 5 fact sheets, a slide presentation and will soon include a Spanish version.
