Wake Up to the Benefits of Breakfast!

What moms around the world have known for years, scientists have now proven. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, having a positive impact on nutrient intake, especially whole grains, low-fat and fat-free dairy, and nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. Breakfast eaters also have better cognitive and academic performance, the tendency to better control their weight, and have a positive impact on their overall health.  According to our 2009 Food & Health Survey, 93 percent of Americans agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet less than half (44 percent) are eating breakfast everyday. 

To help celebrate National School Breakfast Week, the International Food Information Council Foundation has launched a new consumer Breakfast Resources page on www.FoodInsight.org.

The page features consumer-friendly tips and recipes and six new videos from Registered Dietitian Keith Ayoob from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, highlighting the many reasons why breakfast is truly the most important meal of the day. Check out the following video for some easy tips:

 

The new Web page offers a variety of resources to help consumers incorporate breakfast into their day including:

- Wake Up to the Benefits of Breakfast  - Overview of the science behind breakfast's top five benefits;
- Put the Fast into Breakfast - tip sheet with more than 25 quick and simple breakfast recipes for busy bodies on-the-go; and
- Expert Videos-Short vignettes that highlight the importance of breakfast in the overall diet; its energy-boosting effects and impact on academic performance; and breakfast benefits for all ages.

I know I feel better and have more energy throughout the day when I eat breakfast - even if it's an easy, on-the-go meal of low-fat yogurt and a whole grain cereal bar that I eat at my desk in the when I get to work. How do you kick off your day with breakfast?
