I used to love back-to-school season…Who am I kidding, I still love it! The new school supplies, new clothes, new lunchbox, and the onset of cooler, crisper air and changing leaves. But more importantly, it represents an opportunity for a fresh start.
Like me, I bet many of you are wondering where the first half of the year went, and how you’re going to accomplish your New Year’s resolutions (Remember those?) and other goals you set at the start of the year, by December 31st! I tend to get off track with eating healthfully during the summer months, when I am taking vacation, celebrating summer holidays, and attending barbecues, weddings and birthday parties, all of which involve an abundance of delicious foods. Back-to-school is a time to bring my goals back into focus.
As kids are filling their backpacks and lunchboxes with the essentials for a successful school year, we can all take stock of what we need and write our syllabus for the rest of the year. For me, there’s no better way to start eating well again than to visit a Virginia orchard for some apple picking with friends, which also provides an opportunity for physical activity. Then, I’ll keep the calories burning with some back-to-school shopping, including new workout gear to stay motivated to keep up my exercise plan.
While the kids may be lamenting the end of summer and the return to the classroom, there is a positive side to a fresh start – for everyone – in more ways than one!
