2010 International Food Information Council Foundation Food & Health Survey: Media Resources

Overview & Summary
The 2010 Food & Health Survey: Consumer Attitudes toward Food Safety, Nutrition, and Health, conducted by the International Food Information Council Foundation, is the fifth annual, nationally representative, quantitative study designed to gain insights from consumers on various food safety, nutrition, and health-related topics. Findings from this Survey can help guide and shape future education and communication initiatives, as well as trend data to measure the progress made toward achieving dietary guidance.

The 2010 Survey repeated many of the questions asked in previous years; however several new questions were added to better understand consumers’ knowledge and practices regarding caloric intake vs. exercise, physical activity levels and motivators, protein, sodium, caffeine, and food shopping destinations.

Quick Facts

  • Most Americans (70 percent) say they are concerned about their weight status, and the vast majority (77 percent) is trying to lose or maintain their weight. 
  • When it comes to calories consumed versus calories burned, most Americans (58 percent) do not make an effort to balance the two.
  • Of those Americans who say they are trying to lose or maintain weight, only 19 percent say they are keeping track of calories, which can be a tool for those trying to manage weight.
  • Losing weight is the main motivator for Americans who seek to make dietary changes (65 percent); maintaining weight is another key motivator (16 percent).
  • Losing or maintaining weight is the main motivator (35 percent) for Americans who are physically active.
  • A large majority of Americans (77 percent) are not meeting the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Physical Activity Guidelines.
  • The initial benchmark survey was conducted in 2006. Trending surveys were conducted in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. 
  • All data for this study was collected over a two and a half-week period in April and May of 2010 via a Web-based survey of 1,024 adults 18 years and older; the study population in nationally representative of the US population based on the Census.

Moderator: Eric Mittenthal, Director, Media Relations

Eric Mittenthal is the Director of Media Relations for the International Food Information Council Foundation, based in Washington, DC.  Eric came to the Foundation following a career as a television reporter and producer in several markets around the country, most recently working for WAGA-TV, the Fox affiliate in Atlanta.  Previously he also served as the Jacksonville Bureau Chief for WCTI-TV, the ABC affiliate in New Bern, NC and was a reporter for KIFI-TV, the ABC affiliate in Idaho Falls, ID.

Eric graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.  He also received a Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA.





Speaker: Marianne Smith Edge, MS, RD, LD, FADA, Senior Vice President, Nutrition and Food Safety

Marianne Smith Edge, MS, RD, LD, FADA is the Senior Vice President for Nutrition & Food Safety for the International Food Information Council. Marianne has over twenty five years of experience in the healthcare and nutrition communications and marketing field. She is a past president of the American Dietetic Association and a member of the Institute of Food Technologists. Marianne currently serves on the USDA National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics Advisory Board, the advisory board to the USDA Secretary of Agriculture.

Marianne received her B.S. in Dietetics from the University of Kentucky and a MS in Public Health-Nutrition from Western Kentucky University.

 Speaker: Wendy Reinhardt Kapsak, MS, RD, Senior Director, Health and Wellness

Wendy Reinhardt Kapsak is Senior Director of Health and Wellness at the International Food Information Council Foundation in Washington, DC, where she specializes in consumer and opinion leader communications on a variety of food safety and nutrition issues. Wendy is a registered dietitian and a member of several professional organizations, including the American Dietetic Association, Institute of Food Technologists, and the IDEA Health and Fitness Association. With more than 15 years in the fitness industry, she is a certified group fitness instructor.  She has also held a private practice specializing in weight management in the past.

Wendy received her Bachelors degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia in Nutrition and Physical Fitness.  She received her Masters degree from James Madison University in Nutrition and Physical Activity, and completed her dietetic internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut.
