Do Summer Drinks Have to Be a Catch-22?

Can Summertime Beverages Help You Hydrate and Celebrate Without Gaining Weight? 5 Ways to Make It Happen!

Summer has finally arrived, and along with it comes a few things I’ve been eagerly anticipating. My dreams of warmer weather, outdoor activities and summertime celebrations have come true.

If you’re like me, you tend to drink more beverages as the weather warms up. It makes sense as you spend more time outdoors or attending social gatherings. But are you aware of the extra “liquid calories” you may be adding to your diet? If you’re not careful, one or two extra beverages could add up to several hundred calories or even more! And those extra calories can lead to weight gain if you don’t balance them out with physical activity or by cutting back somewhere else in your diet. Unless you are exercising for more than an hour, you don’t need extra calories from sugar (carbohydrate). But, you do need to stay well-hydrated in the heat.

You might want to consider substituting low-calorie sweeteners for sugar in your summertime beverages. This swap allows you to enjoy sweet drinks without the extra calories, and it makes it easier for you to manage your weight. Scientific research has proven that low calorie sweeteners are safe and effective for weight management.lemonade

Here are some of my favorite summertime beverages and tips for enjoying them while managing calories:

Water: No calories to worry about here! Try adding a few slices of your favorite fruit or vegetable such as watermelon, strawberries, or cucumber for a refreshing hint of flavor.

Soda: Choosing diet soda instead of regular will save you about 150 calories per 12 ounce serving.

Lemonade: There are numerous options to choose from in a wide range of flavors. Choosing those made with low calorie sweeteners will save you about 90 calories per 12 ounce serving.

Iced coffee or iced tea: Use low-calorie sweetener packets in place of sugar.

Alcoholic beverages: Alternate alcoholic beverages with low- or no-calorie beverages. In mixed drinks, use a low-calorie sweetener instead of sugar.
